Radiation Therapy Treatments

At Southeast Regional Prostate Cancer Treatment Center, we are proud to offer our patients state-of-the-art radiation therapy for their cancer treatment.

Depending on the location, size, and type of tumor, you may receive one or a combination of radiation therapy techniques. One of the most effective and least invasive of these techniques is external beam radiation therapy, which we offer in addition to other sophisticated, highly-targeted cancer treatments.

External Beam Radiation Therapy

Halcyon

Halcyon™ by Varian is the latest breakthrough in radiation therapy, offering patients fast and high-quality treatment in this reimagined and advanced system. This new system provides faster treatment delivery times which can be completed in 17 seconds or less. Faster image guidance and treatment delivery means less time on the table for the patient and less potential for patient movement during the treatment. This technology is especially beneficial for prostate cancer patients as it shapes the radiation beams to conform to the prostate, reducing the impact on surrounding healthy tissue. Halcyon was designed to enhance patient comfort such as a quiet system, smooth motion, and easy access.

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a type of external beam radiation therapy that uses advanced technology, such as CT scans or other three-dimensional (3-D) modeling, to manipulate beams of radiation to conform to the shape of a tumor. This makes it possible for the radiation oncologist to direct high doses of radiation at the tumor without increasing the risk of damaging nearby organs. IMRT also allows the radiation oncologist to vary the intensity of some of the beams of radiation. Many patients experience a better quality of life since IMRT can limit the number of side effects experienced.

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) is the use of three-dimensional (3-D) imaging (CT, MRI, or PET scans), with the precise technology of IMRT to pinpoint and treat cancerous tumors. It is used before each external radiation therapy treatment session, which allows the radiation oncologist to make adjustments as needed. Because of this accuracy, normal tissue has a greater chance of being spared. IGRT, which is often administered in conjunction with IMRT, is primarily used to treat tumors in areas of the body that are prone to movements, such as the lungs, liver, and prostate gland, as well as tumors located close to critical organs and tissues.

Other Innovative Technologies for Optimal Cancer Treatment

CT Simulation for Treatment Planning

To ensure a cancer treatment that is as safe and effective as possible, the Southeast Regional Prostate Cancer Treatment Center care team will perform Computer Tomography (CT) Scanning & Simulation before treatments begin.

CT simulation allows the Radiation Oncology specialists to design a treatment plan specifically for the patient based on the size, location, and shape of the tumor. These images are used by the radiation therapy planning team and your radiation oncologist to develop your customized treatment plan.

The patient will have 3-D images (CT Scans) taken, which are then used with the treatment planning software that helps determine how to best deliver the radiation beams while reducing damage to surrounding areas. In some cases, additional imaging such as a PET/CT or MRI may be needed for the treatment planning process.

Cone Beam CT (CBCT)

Cone Beam CT (CBCT) is a form of image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) that allows the radiation therapy team to obtain a CT image of your treatment area prior to treatment delivery.  CBCT is performed on the linac and the images are utilized to ensure you are in the proper position prior to treatment. The team will also utilize CBCT to visualize your bladder and rectum to ensure optimal positioning. CBCT improves the radiation therapy delivery process by ensuring you are accurately positioned prior to each treatment and decreasing the amount of radiation delivered to normal tissues.
